Tae Kwon Do
in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Worcester and Newport
Tae means "to Kick" or "Smash with the feet," Kwon implies "punching" or "destroying with the hand or fist," and Do means "way" or "method." Taekwondo thus, is the technique of unarmed combat for self defence, that involves the skillful application of techniques. This includes punching, jumping kicks, blocks, dodges and parrying actions with hands and feet. It is more than just a physical fighting skill, it also involves a way of thinking and a pattern of life, requiring strict discipline. It is a system of training both the mind and the body in which, great emphasis is placed on the development of the trainee's moral character.
I have trained all over the world with some great instructors. What I love about martial arts, is there is always something more to learn. I have trained under Chief Master William Clark from the ATA, in the martial arts world he is a legend. He is an eighth degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and was one of the founders of the ATA, under the late Grand Master H.U.Lee. What I have learnt from Taekwondo is that the foot can be just as useable as the fist. Great kicking combinations are found in this style and have helped me get my team into great kickers.
Maarlisk is a very practical style, so the high kicks are there for show. But I am a great believer in keeping it real. So even though the students will learn high kicks, these are purely for demo purposes. Power and self defence kicks never go above the waist.
